JPG vs PNG vs WebP

JPG is commonly used for photographs and other images with many colors. PNG is useful when transparency or lossless image data is important. WebP supports both lossy and lossless image compression and is commonly used for web images. The best choice depends on compatibility, image content, transparency requirements and the intended destination.

Understanding quality settings

For JPG and WebP output, lower quality settings can reduce file size while increasing the chance of visible compression artifacts. Higher settings generally preserve more detail but can create larger files. PNG output is lossless in this browser-based conversion process, so its quality slider does not change the PNG encoding in the same way.

Tip:

If your image contains a transparent background, choose PNG or a format that supports transparency. Converting a transparent image to JPG can replace transparency with a solid background.
